Glossary of terms

• Non-Chronological Report - A non-fiction piece of writing, which isn't written in time order, but which gives the reader information about a topic.
• Explanation Text - A non-fiction piece of writing which explains why something happens or how something works.
• Adjective - A word that describes somebody or something.
• Clause - distinct part of a sentence including a verb.
• Complex Sentence - consists of a main clause and includes one or more subordinate clauses.
• Compound sentence - has two or more clauses joined by and, but or so.
• Connective - A word or phrase that links clauses or sentences.
• Direct Speech - Uses the speaker's original words and speech marks.
• Modal Verb - The verbs can/could, will/would, shall/should, may/might, must/ought.
• Noun Phrase - a group of words that functions in the same way as a noun in a sentence.
• Prefix - Added to the start of a word.
• Suffix - Added to the end of a word.
